Education is not the filling of a pail, but

the lighting of a fire.

- Plutarch

Lifelong Learning Begins Here

Grown from a seed planted nearly a decade ago, Singing Stones is a non-profit private school serving the greater East Bay.

Our curriculum and approach to childhood development are based upon the internationally acclaimed philosophy of Waldorf education founded nearly 100 years ago. Many of these principles are the basis for Finland's national school system — a system widely considered one of the most successful in the world.

Waldorf education recognizes a child’s curiosity, passion and imagination ultimately drive their desire to learn.  Its approach to teaching the “head, heart and hands,” balances cognitive and emotional intelligence, spirituality, (or individuality) and physical activity through the daily rhythms of the class.

As a result, Waldorf graduates emerge as confident, well-rounded citizens with a strong work ethic and thirst for learning — aware of their limitless potential and ready to contribute to their communities and the world.

We invite you to join our community of parents and Waldorf-trained teachers dedicated to the love of learning.

Adventures abound in our awe-inspiring 7 acres of open space, tree groves, grassy knolls and bio-dynamic garden.

Ignite a Fire...

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” — Plutarch

Curiosity and the love of learning is a fire. Igniting and fueling that fire is our cherished task as parents and educators.

Teaching children at the developmentally appropriate time is essential.

At Singing Stones we have a deep understanding and respect for each child’s developmental stages, and an environment that nurtures each individual through love, warmth, creativity, free play, joy, humor, artistic expression and cultivated aesthetic surroundings.

Inspire Hearts Before Minds

Inspire the heart and the mind will follow…

Before teaching a child how to read, one must inspire a love of literacy.

Before teaching math, one must instill a love of rhythm, song and dance.

Before teaching botany, one must cultivate a love of exploration into the mysteries of the wilderness.

At Singing Stones academics are taught through imaginative play, artistic activities, simple crafts, verses, songs, puppetry, fairy tales, gardening, nature walks, and more.

A true Renaissance education, our students spend the first three to four years laying a firm and rich foundation in the development of their curiosity and imagination. It's through this foundation they are able to absorb abstract concepts and wholeheartedly engage in the more rigorous academics of the later grades.

The unique Waldorf philosophy of inspiring the heart before engaging the mind, enables our students to develop capacities that eventually outpace those in mainstream education, helping them become fully balanced, lifelong learners through college and beyond.

A Global Movement Towards a Different Way

With increased media attention on how mainstream education is failing our children, it's no surprise that Waldorf education is the largest and fastest growing nonsectarian educational movement in the world.

There are now more than 1,100 Waldorf schools worldwide, on every continent, in over 60 nations.

For many children the pressures of being averaged and compared translates into distress, and a loss of curiosity and their love of learning.

In 2011,  The New York Times sparked national media coverage with its front page story on why Silicon Valley parents are turning to Waldorf Education.

Preparing for Life

This film picks up where the New Your Times story left off.  It was created in Silicon Valley by the Waldorf School of the Peninsula.  Entrepreneurs, Stanford researchers, investment bankers, and parents who run some of the largest hi-tech companies in the world, weigh-in on what children need to navigate the challenges of the 21st Century in order to find success, purpose, and joy in their lives.

We Wish to Make an Impact in The World

Singing Stones is committed to a creating a school with a diverse socioeconomic enrollment, made possible in large part through private donations.

Please consider a donation to our Annual Fund. A gift to our Annual Fund helps our school support teachers' salaries, facility needs, classroom supplies, school expansion and tuition aid. These are critical needs as our enrollment has doubled each year with campus expansion plans underway.
