Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the school ask for an Annual Fund gift in addition to tuition?
All independent schools budget a certain amount to be raised through donations. Our independent school relies solely upon tuition revenues, fundraising, and philanthropic gifts to meet its operating and capital expenses. Tuition is a non-tax-deductible contracted payment, for which families receive a measurable benefit. Annual Fund gifts to the school are considered donations and are fully tax-deductible.
Why doesn’t the school raise tuition to cover expenses?
There is a delicate balance in keeping tuition affordable and competitive in the region, while also meeting the yearly needs of the school. A balance of tuition and donations allows us to retain a reasonable tuition structure that promotes socio-economic diversity in the school community.
How much am I expected to give?
All families, regardless of any tuition assistance they receive, are asked to give an amount that is meaningful to them. Each and every gift is valued and contributes equally toward the goal of one-hundred-percent participation from the Board members, faculty, staff, and parents.
When should I make my gift or pledge?
The Annual Fund drive officially ends at the close of school fiscal year on June 30, 2017, with next year’s Annual Fund drive beginning July 1, 2017.
What is the best method for making a gift?
Cash or checks offer the best value to the school, as these transactions have no hidden fees. Please use the Annual Fund remittance envelope, to ensure confidentiality and direct the gift to our office in a timely manner.
Can I also donate stock to the Annual Fund?
Yes! Donating stock is a great way to make a gift to the school. Giving securities provides you with a tax deduction for the appreciated value of the stock without incurring capital gains taxes.
Why is participation important?
The school’s financial strength is dependent upon the support of all our families. Participation is a key indicator to foundations, corporate donors, and other members of our community that the school is strong and worthy of their support.
How do employers support the Annual Fund?
Employers may contribute to independent schools by matching their employees’ gifts to our school. Businesses are also known to gift directly to non-profit organizations that are in alignment with their company’s values. Please check with your employer to see if a matching gift or sponsorship program exists. If not, perhaps suggest your employer start such a program as a meaningful way to increase their presence in the community.
Whom does our school serve?
Our school welcomes students of all backgrounds and abilities. As part of our immediate and long-term vision, we are committed to serving our community, who represents the broadest of social and economic backgrounds. True to the Waldorf philosophy, we strive to meet the diverse needs and abilities of all our students. Children are met at their individual level in the classroom.
